Abstract

This research is motivated by the problems faced by students in learning describing people using English in SMP Negeri 2 Wonoayu, Sidoarjo. The students are less confident to describe using English because English is not their mother language. So, they are afraid to make mistakes in speak up. Therefore, the researcher uses stick puppet as media to help students improve their confident to describe using English. The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness of using stick puppet as media to increase students’ speaking ability in describing pepole to seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Wonoayu, Sidoarjo. This research uses true-experimental study. The sample of this research are students in 7E as an experimental class and 7F as a control class. Each class consists of 35 students. The technique of collecting data is by giving test to the students. Pre-test and post test. The result this research showed that the students could increase their ability in describing people by using stick puppet. It seen from the calculating of T-test formula by researcher. the result of calculation showed that in the significance degree of 5%, the value of t-test is higher than t-table (6.184 > 1.995). It means, there is significant effect of using stick puppet to increase students’ speaking ability in describing people.
