Abstract

The purpose of conducting this study is to find out an empirical data, to see whether there is significant effect in students’ writing descriptive text in the seventh grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Tulangan-Sidoarjo before and after being taught using picture puzzle. In this case, the researcher used quantitative method. The subject of this study is the seventh grade students and the samples are 60 students. The researcher divided the main activity into pre-test, treatment and post-test. The result of this research shows that using picture puzzle media is effective in improving students’ writing in descriptive text. This implication of picture puzzle media to improves the student in learning process and the result. Background and technique this media increase students’ interest when combined with appropriate method. In this research, the researcher uses label that consists of vocabulary to write descriptive text. Picture media helps the students in writing descriptive text and makes the students easily to identify the generic structure and language feature of descriptive text. Based on the statistical calculation from mean result of pre-test is 61.23 and the result mean of post-test is 83.3. The students’ score is increasing after given the treatment. The researcher used ttest to calculate the data and to test the hypothesis. The result of calculation of this research is t-test is higher than t-table. Here, t-test is 2.7 and the table is 2.0017 with degree of freedom 58 and level of significance 5%. Therefore, it proves that alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states there is significant effect in using picture puzzle in students’ writing in descriptive text, is accepted.
