Abstract

This research presents a comprehensive theoretical study in the science of statistics, reviewing the fundamental concepts and modern developments in this vital field. The paper sheds light on the importance of statistics as a methodological tool for understanding and interpreting phenomena across various scientific disciplines and domains of knowledge. The research examines the concept of statistics and its historical evolution, its multiple branches and types, its methodologies and diverse approaches, as well as the relationship between statistics and the phenomenon of big data and machine learning. It further reviews the most prominent methodological challenges facing researchers in the twenty-first century, including the replication crisis, the ethics of statistics, and the gap between theory and practice. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, relying on the induction and analysis of relevant scientific literature, and subsequently deriving findings and recommendations. The study concludes that statistics has become an indispensable pillar of the scientific research system, that there is a pressing need to develop applied statistics curricula to keep pace with accelerating technological development, and that there is a need to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure that statistical tools are employed in a rigorous and responsible manner.
