Abstract

This study focused on the preparation and characterisation of polyaniline, as well as the nanostructures of titanium dioxide and copper oxide at a ratio of 30 per cent, and the nano- and hybrid structures of polyaniline with titanium dioxide and copper oxide at a ratio of 50 per cent The X-ray diffraction results revealed a semi-crystalline nature of the polyaniline polymer, in contrast to the highly crystalline structures of both titanium dioxide and copper oxide, with clear hybrid interference between all the components. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope revealed a clustered, cauliflower-like morphology with pores of of poly-aniline, characterised by particle sizes ranging from 50 to 71 nanometres, as well as the coating of polymer chains onto the oxide surfaces within the hybrid nanocomposite. Furthermore, infrared spectroscopy results confirmed the presence of functional groups in poly-aniline, as well as metal-organic , with slight displacements confirming that strong physicochemical bonding is present. Finally, cyclic voltammetry and elemental analysis measurements showed that excellent supercapacitive behaviour was recorded for the titanium dioxide and copper oxide nanocomposites, and it was also found a very high oxidation current of 2,544 microamperes. Furthermore, the hybrid nanocomposite demonstrated electrochemical response and stability with high equilibrium performance, which may make it suitable for energy applications.
