Abstract
This research addresses the emergence of fabricated Hadith as one of the most prominent issues that confronted the Prophetic Sunnah in its early historical development. Political, intellectual, sectarian, and social conditions contributed to the emergence of fabricated narrations and their attribution to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which necessitated early scholarly vigilance by Muslim scholars to protect the Sunnah from interpolation and distortion. The study aims to trace the historical origins of Hadith fabrication, identify the stages through which this phenomenon developed, and uncover its principal motives and causes, while highlighting the efforts of Hadith scholars to confront it through the principles of isnad and matn criticism, the classification of fabricated traditions, and the establishment of scholarly criteria for distinguishing authentic reports from unsound and fabricated ones. The research adopts the historical method to trace the development of fabrication across the Islamic eras, and the analytical method to examine its causes and consequences and evaluate the efforts of scholars to limit it. The study concludes that Hadith fabrication did not arise from a single cause; rather, it resulted from multiple interrelated factors, foremost among them political conflict, sectarian fanaticism, storytellers (qussas), heretical groups, and ignorance of the principles governing transmission. The efforts of Hadith scholars contributed substantially to preserving the Sunnah by establishing rigorous methodologies for evaluating reports, making the sciences of Hadith among the most precise and systematic disciplines for verifying transmitted information.
