Abstract

Reasoning from the Holy Qur’an is one of the most prominent exegetical methodologies employed by Qur’anic commentators to clarify the meanings of verses and weigh different interpretive opinions. This methodology is manifested particularly clearly in Muhammad Husayn al-Tabataba’i’s Al-Mizan, where he made interpreting the Qur’an through the Qur’an itself a methodological foundation for addressing exegetical disagreements, relying on the principle of the integration of the Qur’anic text and the unity of its semantic structure. This study aims to examine al-Tabataba’i’s methodology of reasoning from the Qur’an in addressing exegetical disagreement, identify the scholarly foundations upon which he relied in weighing competing opinions, and evaluate this methodology through a critical comparative study with a number of exegetical methodologies. The study adopts the descriptive-analytical approach to trace the features of al-Tabataba’i’s methodology in Al-Mizan; the comparative approach to weigh his views against those of certain other commentators; and the critical approach to evaluate his arguments and determine their consistency with the principles of exegesis and the foundations of reasoning. The study addresses the concept of reasoning from the Qur’an and exegetical disagreement, then presents the methodological foundations upon which al-Tabataba’i based his approach to interpreting the Qur’an through the Qur’an, analyzes practical examples from his exegesis, and ultimately highlights areas of agreement and disagreement between him and other commentators. The study concludes that al-Tabataba’i established a coherent methodology for reasoning from the Qur’an based on relating verses to one another and utilizing the Qur’anic context to clarify meaning and weigh competing opinions. This contributed to presenting a coherent exegetical vision for addressing many areas of interpretive disagreement. The study also shows that this methodology is distinguished by the strength of its internal textual reasoning, while certain methodological observations remain that call for scholarly discussion in light of comparative exegetical approaches. This confirms the importance of benefiting from this methodology while subjecting it to objective critical study.
