Abstract

Objective: To identify, evaluate, and synthesize the latest evidence on the prevalence, types, risk factors, impacts, and interventions related to mental health in breastfeeding mothers from reputable journals (2021–2026). Method: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases using structured search strategies. Articles published between 2021 and 2026 from reputable journals meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed narratively following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Results: From 1,247 identified articles, 38 articles met the inclusion criteria. Postpartum depression was found in 10–20% of breastfeeding mothers and postpartum anxiety in 20–30%. A bidirectional relationship between mental disorders and breastfeeding has been confirmed. Main risk factors include nipple pain, perceived insufficient milk, lack of social support, and hormonal factors. Cognitive-behavioral interventions, peer support, and telemedicine proved effective. Novelty: An integrated approach encompassing routine screening, psychosocial support, and evidence-based interventions is needed to optimize the mental health of breastfeeding mothers and breastfeeding success.
