Abstract
The purpose of conducting this research is to find out there is significant effect of students’ speaking ability at eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Gedangan before and after being taught by using role play. In this case, the researcher used quantitative method. The subject of this research was 8I class of SMP Negeri 2 Gedangan which consist of 33 students. The researcher divided the research into pre-test, treatment and post-test. Based on the calculation, the mean score of post-test from experimental class is 55.63 and the mean score of post-test from control class is 38.11. The students’ score of post-test from experimental class is higher than control class. In this case, the expereimental class get the higher score, because they are being taught by using role play. The researcher used t-test to test the hypothesis. The result show that t-test score is higher than t-table. The t-test score is 37.73 and the t-table is 1.996 with degree of freedom 67 and significance 5%. It means that the alternative hypothesis (H_a) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H_0) is rejected. From the result of the data analysis above, the use role play gives effect in students’ speaking ability.
