Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out whether there is significant effect in students’ writing ability in descriptive text of eight grade at SMPN 2 Candi Sidoarjo before and after being taught using estafet writing method. In this research, the researcher used quantitative method. The subject of this research is VIII-D and VIII-F grade of SMPN 2 Candi Sidoarjo, which consisted of 37 students. ForVIII-D as experimental class and VIII-F as control class. The researcher splits the main activity into pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Based on the statistical calculation from mean result of pre-test is 67.04 and the mean result of post-test is 79.46. The students’ score is increasing after given the treatment. In addition, the researcher used ttest to count the data and to test the hypothesis. The result of the calculation og this research is ttest is higher than ttable. It is proven from the result of ttest is 2.1 and the ttable is 1.993 with degree of freedom 72 and level of significance 5%. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. From the result of the data analysis above, the use of estafet writing method gives significant effect in students’ writing ability. In addition, estafet writing can be developed as active and creative method for the next researcher.
