Abstract

The digitization of global supply networks is becoming more complex, adding greater value to visibility, operational efficiency and resilience. This review explores the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI), distributed ledger technology (DLT) and automation on the creation of intelligent and adaptive supply chain architectures. AI can aid in demand forecasting, predictive risk assessment, inventory optimization, and data driven decision making, while DLT can enhance transaction transparency, product traceability, and information integrity among various stakeholders. Automation and intelligent orchestration are designed to automate repetitive processes, coordinate operations and enable timely responses to disruptions. Combining these technologies with IoT devices, enterprise systems and an operation control tower can create inter-connected digital spaces that facilitate real-time monitoring and adaptive planning. However, all these things are not enough to prevent implementation to be limited by the lack of interoperability, cybersecurity risk, privacy issues, high investments required and the different technological capabilities of supply chain participants. In addition, inaccurate data, algorithmic bias, limited model explainability and poor governance can negatively influence the accuracy of automated decisions. For future works, there is a need for further studies on integrated technological frameworks, explainable AI, privacy preserving information sharing, interoperable smart contracts, as well as the long term impacts of digitalization on supply chain resilience and sustainability. When combined with the power of AI, DLT, and automation, this holds significant promise for reshaping disjointed supply chains into transparent, responsive, and resilient systems, ultimately transforming the entire sector.
