Abstract

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are on the move, and with climate change.Climate change is influencing the global spread of EIDs. Climate change is impacting the ecological cycles of diseases, vectors, and hosts because of increasing temperatures, changes in rainfall and increased frequency of extreme weather events. This narrative review briefly summarizes the research conducted on climate-sensitive infectious diseases and the main mechanisms through which these changes are thought to occur. Drought, flood and infrastructure failures are increasingly associated with food- and water-borne diseases (FWBD), such as cholera and leptospirosis. Vector-borne diseases that are spreading to temperate and highland areas include dengue, chikungunya, malaria, and Lyme disease. More zoonotic spillovers (such as Ebola, Nipah and SARS-CoV-2) are observed in the environment where there are changes. This covers new challenges such as microorganisms from perma frost and thermotolerant infections of fungus. Instead of offering new epidemiological modeling, this review makes use of current estimates of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD). According to the estimations, the burden of infectious diseases is expected to rise in susceptible regions affected by climate change, such as South Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa. Inadequate monitoring systems, health inequities brought on by climate change, and disrupted data sources are some of the biggest gaps in response.Pathogen genome advancements, satellite surveillance, AI-based forecasting, and One Health approaches provide useful ways to stop issues before they start. Creating transdisciplinary, egalitarian, and climate-responsive public health systems is essential to reducing the rising risks of infectious illnesses connected with climate change. Further research on infectious diseases and climate change should concentrate on non-vector-borne, direct-transmission pathogens and expand research in tropical areas. In low- and middle-income countries, local research was usually ignored. The dearth of thorough, socially inclusive, and regionally balanced research on infectious diseases has hindered our comprehension of the true effects of climate change on health.
