Abstract
This study aims to examine the criteria employed by Allama Abd al-Husayn al-Amini to identify fabricated hadiths by analyzing his critical methodology as manifested in his encyclopedic work Al-Ghadir fi al-Kitab wa al-Sunnah wa al-Adab. The significance of this study derives from the scholarly position occupied by Al-Ghadir in hadith and historical studies. The author did not merely compile narrations related to the Hadith of Ghadir; rather, he undertook extensive hadith criticism based on tracing chains of transmission, evaluating narrators, examining textual content, and drawing upon the statements of leading hadith critics from various Islamic schools, while also employing historical, linguistic, and rational evidence to weigh competing narrations. The study adopts a descriptive, analytical, and comparative methodology. It examines the texts in which al-Amini discusses weak and fabricated narrations, analyzes his critical tools, and then compares them with the principles established by scholars of hadith terminology and specialists in the criticism of narrations. The study concludes that Allama al-Amini did not rely on a single criterion when evaluating narrations. Rather, he developed an integrated critical framework that combined isnad criticism, matn criticism, and the use of external evidence, while making extensive use of primary hadith sources. The study also demonstrates that his methodology is characterized by comparative reasoning and frequent reference to the statements of hadith scholars, which lends considerable scholarly strength to his critical judgments and contributes to the construction of a coherent critical perspective toward narrations that he regarded as fabricated or unsubstantiated. The study recommends conducting further applied research on al-Amini's methodology in the criticism of narrations in light of contemporary hadith methodologies.
