Abstract

Organizations are facing more advanced threats in the digital realm, creating a need to adopt a new approach to security that is more effective in addressing those threats. The study employs a secondary research methodology with an exploratory study approach, assessing the challenges in implementing Zero Trust security models and the business benefits it can bring. The research employs a public cybersecurity breach dataset of breach incidents for organizations, attack methods, industry types, and exposed records to analyze trends in cybersecurity. Data from the cyber breach was used for Exploratory Data Analysis in the R Studio to create three visualizations, which analyze the cyber breach trends over time, the most common methods of cyber attack, and the distribution of cyber breach by industry. The results have shown that hacking was the most frequent method used to breach a security system, and that industries with sensitive information have a higher level of cyber security exposure. The findings also show that the deployment of Zero Trust concepts, such as continuous identity verification, least privilege access, device authentication, and continuous monitoring, can greatly enhance the security of an organization, minimize unauthorized access, and bolster operational resilience. But there are various issues with legacy system integration, policy implementation, technical complexity, staff training and investment in resources which need to be solved for the successful implementation. The paper suggests that Zero Trust security models, implemented following a structured framework, offer businesses a sustainable security approach that improves business continuity, compliance, data protection, and long-term security, in modern digital landscapes.
