Abstract
Modern manufacturing and supply chains are evolving rapidly due to digital transformation and Industry 4.0 technologies. Lean manufacturing alone is insufficient to handle complexity, requiring integration with systems engineering, data integration, and automation for improved supply chain performance and responsiveness. Aims: This study aims to develop a systems engineering-based framework integrating lean manufacturing, automation, and digital supply chain technologies. A systematic literature review approach was adopted using peer-reviewed articles from Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE, and ScienceDirect databases. Keywords included lean manufacturing, systems engineering, Industry 4.0, data integration, automation, and supply chain integration. Studies published between 2018 to 2023 were analyzed. A thematic analysis approach was applied to classify literature into key players: requirements, system architecture, operations, data integration, automation, feedback, and performance evaluation to develop a conceptual framework. The findings indicate that integrating lean manufacturing with systems engineering and digital technologies significantly improves supply chain performance. Data integration enhances real-time visibility and decision-making, while automation reduces operational variability and increases efficiency. The systems engineering framework ensures structured coordination across supply chain layers, enabling better alignment of processes and objectives. Results show improvements in lead time reduction, cost efficiency, flexibility, and quality. However, challenges such as system complexity, data silos, skill gaps, and implementation costs limit full adoption. Despite these barriers, the integrated approach demonstrates strong potential for developing resilient and high-performing smart supply chains. The study confirms that systems engineering-driven integration of lean and digital technologies enhances supply chain efficiency, resilience, and overall operational performance significantly.
