Abstract

This article investigates the shared phonetics and morphology between modern German and the Baltic languages, specifically Old Prussian, Latvian, and Lithuanian. The analysis reveals intriguing linguistic connections that can facilitate intercultural communication. The examination of phonetics uncovers shared sounds, such as the voiceless 'ch' in German, corresponding to similar sounds in Lithuanian and Old Prussian. Moreover, stress placement on the first syllable is observed in both German and the Baltic languages. Morphologically, German and the Baltic languages share complex case systems, with German having four cases and Lithuanian and Latvian featuring even more. The article also highlights vocabulary similarities between Old Prussian and German. Understanding these shared phonetic and morphological elements can enhance language learning and foster cultural understanding and connections. The implications of these findings for language pedagogy are discussed, and avenues for future research in phonetic and morphological similarities and their impact on language instruction and intercultural communication are suggested. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the role of language as a bridge builder, enabling deeper cultural understanding and connections between diverse societies.
